Enhancing Wellbeing with Namaste Care Sessions

Over the past few months, Queens View Harbour has focused on creating specialised activities for residents who are less able to participate in more active engagements. This initiative aims to promote positive outcomes, fulfil residents' wishes and enrich their experiences through dedicated, fine-tuned activities.

The introduction of Namaste Care sessions, led by our enthusiastic Wellbeing Coordinator Clea and supported by experienced nurse Emma, has been a significant part of this effort. Clea, with a deep commitment to enhancing resident care, collaborated with Emma, who has prior experience in delivering Namaste Care, to bring this innovative program to Queens View Harbour Nursing Home in Ayrshire.

Namaste Care, known for its holistic and sensory approach, was implemented following thorough research and consultations with residents and their families. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and it was decided to conduct Namaste Care sessions 2-3 times per week. These sessions are designed not only for our less-abled residents but also for anyone who wishes to participate in a relaxing wellbeing session.

With the support of the management team, who sourced and provided a variety of sensory equipment, several themed sessions were organised focusing on the five senses: Touch, Smell, Taste, Hearing and Sight. Each session was carefully crafted to provide a unique sensory experience:

  • Touch: Gentle hand, arm and head massages were given to the residents, creating a soothing and comforting environment.
  • Smell: The lounge was filled with delightful scents from a humidifier, offering a calming atmosphere complemented by sensory lights.
  • Taste: Residents enjoyed an assortment of taste sensations, including tropical yogurts, fruits like mango and papaya and a variety of chocolates for the sweet-toothed among us.
  • Hearing: Music was selected based on individual preferences, such as classical and piano music for Ivan and Abba songs for Helen, enhancing their relaxation during massages.
  • Sight: Visual experiences included watching tropical fish videos with pleasant background music, providing a tranquil setting.

These sessions have become an integral part of our activity programme, ensuring inclusivity for all residents regardless of their abilities. The benefits have been profound, offering relaxation and enriching sensory experiences.

Additionally, as part of Glad to Care Week, our Staff Nurse Linda brought her Soul Sanctuary to Queens View Harbour, offering Reiki and Drum Healing for both residents and staff. This special Wellbeing Wednesday was a highlight, promoting holistic health and relaxation.

Looking ahead, we are excited about our upcoming annual Garden Party and are seeking theme suggestions from our community. We also encourage everyone to participate in our Employee of the Month scheme. If you know someone who has gone above and beyond in caring for your loved one, please let the team know.
