Cycling for All Abilities, An Inclusive Adventure

In a heartwarming initiative to ensure that everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can continue to enjoy their past hobbies, East Ayrshire Council has launched All Ability Cycles, a community club designed to provide inclusive cycling opportunities. This innovative programme has been embraced by Queens View Harbour, offering residents a chance to pedal their way to joy and freedom.

All Ability Cycles provides a range of accessible cycles, catering to diverse needs. The fleet includes wheelchair bikes, side-by-side cycles, tandems and tricycles, ensuring that everyone from those needing a little support to those requiring full assistance can participate. The programme's goal is to reduce barriers to cycling, making it a fun and supportive experience for all.

Our residents have been making the most of this fantastic initiative, supported by dedicated staff and family members. The activity has become a cherished part of the monthly planner, with residents eagerly anticipating each session. The return from these cycling adventures is always filled with laughter, funny stories and heartwarming photos, showcasing the pure joy and sense of accomplishment experienced by all.

Enjoying Cycling for the First Time

One particularly touching story is of a resident who, unable to mobilise independently and reliant on a wheelchair, had the opportunity to participate in cycling for the first time. This experience was made possible by the wheelchair bike, a testament to the inclusivity and accessibility of All Ability Cycles.

The proximity of the cycling facility, just a short drive from our home, adds to the convenience and excitement. Even on rainy days, the fun doesn't stop as the facility offers indoor cycling options. A special mention goes to Bill, our beloved driver, who ensures safe transport and joins in the cycling fun with as much enthusiasm as our residents.

The weekly visits to the cycling centre have become a highlight for both residents and staff. It's not just about physical activity; it's about community, support and shared joy. Staff members participate alongside residents, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual encouragement. Family members, too, get involved, with one resident's son recently joining to support his dad, adding a personal and emotional dimension to the experience.

Adding to the community spirit, Queens View Harbour has been filled with excitement as Troon prepares to host the 152nd Open. The transformation of the town, with tents, grandstands and revamped courses, has been a spectacle to behold. Many residents, especially the keen ex-golfers, are eagerly watching the preparations and looking forward to cheering on the players. The annual appearance of the ferris wheel adds to the festive atmosphere, promising fun outings for residents and staff alike.

In a world where inclusivity and accessibility are of greatest importance, All Ability Cycles stands out as a beacon of hope and joy, ensuring that everyone at Queens View Harbour can continue to engage in beloved activities, creating lasting memories and strengthening the bonds of community.
