A Visit from Poppy Scotland

Poppy Scotland

At Queens View Care Home, we recently had the privilege of welcoming Valerie McFarlane from Poppy Scotland for a special Remembrance Day event. Valerie, who has been with Poppy Scotland for 11 years, gave a lovely presentation about the organisation's work supporting former and serving members of the Armed Forces and their families. She even brought along some of her beautifully hand-crocheted poppies, which she sells to raise funds for this important cause.

Our residents were fascinated by Valerie’s stories of the Armed Forces community and the support that Poppy Scotland provides. Many of them shared their own memories of life during the war, sparking a lively discussion that covered everything from ration books and gas masks to memories of bomb raids and evacuations. It was a moving experience for everyone, providing a chance for our residents to reflect, share, and connect over these important Remembrance Day memories.

Valerie also explained the significance of the different coloured poppies, which opened up further conversations around the ways we remember and honour those who have served. For many of our residents, Remembrance Day is a cherished time to show respect and feel a sense of connection to the wider community. The day was filled with meaningful conversations and moments of shared understanding, making it an experience we will all hold close to our hearts.
